PUSPA MAJHI KHETRA

Over the past few years some members of Derryvullen South and Garvary MU have sponsored, through COMPASSION, a little Indian girl called Guna. She is now 16 years. Unfortunately the project Guna was involved in has ceased to exist and she is too far from another project to be able to be involved. The members are sad that this has happened but at least Guna has received an education and is able to read and write.

COMPASSION has asked that we will now sponsor another little girl. PUSPA MAJHI KHETRA, 7 years old, 2 January 2003. She is also Indian, from Southwest of Bhubaneshwar.

Puspa lives in the jungle community of Lanjigarh. Typical houses are constructed of dirt floors, mud walls and thatch roofs. The most commonly spoken language is Oriya.

The regional diet consists of bananas, chicken, fish, bread, rice and potatoes. Common helath problems include, malaria, sickle cell anaemia and hepatitis B.

Garvary Branch was formed on Monday 12 November 1951 by the then rector and his wife, Rev Canon R J and Mrs Marian Doonan. We still have one founder members attending branch meetings. The branch celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2001 and to mark the occasion, the branch members made two tapestry kneelers. Sadie Curran, a member of the branch, presented a kneeler in memory of her mother, Mrs Emily Wilson, who was a founder member.

Derryvullen Branch was formed on Tuesday 25 October 1955, by Canon A J A and Mrs MacQuaide. There are still two founder members attending branch meetings.

Both branches have banners. Derryvullen's was designed by Rev Canon Frazer, Mrs Beck Hurst and Mrs Molly Carrothers and was made by the Ulster Bullion Company.

Garvary's was designed by the Branch Members and made by Mrs Jane Lloyd, Ballymena.
